Carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA) is a protein that normally occurs in small amounts in the blood of healthy people. The level of CEA can rise in certain types of cancer and other conditions.
Testing CEA levels is useful for people diagnosed with cancer, especially colorectal cancer, as it can help monitor treatment and detect a recurrence of the disease. It can also be used in some other cancers and conditions to monitor the effectiveness of treatments.
A CEA test is primarily used to monitor the response to cancer treatment and to check for cancer recurrence after treatment. Although it may indicate the presence of cancer, it is not specific enough to serve as the sole diagnostic tool.
A high CEA level may indicate the presence of cancer, especially if someone has already been diagnosed with a certain type of cancer, such as colorectal cancer. It may also indicate a recurrence or progression of the disease, as well as some non-cancer related conditions.
A low CEA level is normally present in healthy individuals. In the context of cancer treatment, a decreasing or low CEA level may indicate a good response to treatment.
