What is Pro-Insulin?

Pro-Insulin is a precursor of insulin, an essential hormone that helps regulate glucose (sugar) levels in the blood. In the pancreas, pro-insulin is converted into insulin and C-peptide. Measuring pro-insulin levels can provide insight into how well the pancreas produces and secretes insulin.

Why should you have Pro-Insulin tested?

Testing pro-insulin levels is particularly useful for people at risk of diabetes, or for those who wish to improve their diabetes management. It can assist in the early detection of insulin resistance and the assessment of pancreatic function before diabetes fully develops.

What does it indicate?

Pro-Insulin levels provide insight into the insulin production capacity of the pancreas. Normal levels indicate healthy insulin production and release, while abnormal levels may point to nascent problems with blood sugar regulation.

What does a high Pro-Insulin level mean?

A high pro-insulin level may indicate insulin resistance, an early indicator of type 2 diabetes. It may also suggest an overload of the pancreatic beta cells, which are working hard to produce more insulin in response to increased blood glucose levels.

What does a low Pro-Insulin level mean?

A low level may indicate a diminished capacity of the pancreas to produce insulin, which is typical for later stages of diabetes or following damage to the pancreas. It may also be a sign of effective treatment or dietary control in people with diabetes.
