Een enzym dat vrijkomt bij granulocytaire ontstekingsreacties in het darmkanaal. Polymorfonucleaire (PMN) granulocyten spelen een belangrijke rol als primaire verdedigingscellen bij ontstekingsreacties op aanvallen van binnendringende pathogenen (micro-organismen en virussen) of beschadigd weefsel (na ongelukken of een operatie). Fysiologisch neemt dit enzym deel aan de intracellulaire afbraak van gefagocyteerd materiaal. Als er door een ontstekingsreactie een degranulatie van leukocyten ontstaat, wordt ook PMN Elastase afgegeven. Normaal wordt PMN Elastase niet of slechts in kleine hoeveelheden in de ontlasting gedetecteerd.
