Amylase and Lipase are enzymes produced by the pancreas that play a crucial role in digestion. Amylase helps break down carbohydrates, while Lipase breaks down fats. A blood test for Amylase and Lipase measures the levels of these enzymes in the blood to assess the health of the pancreas and to diagnose conditions such as pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas).
Testing Amylase and Lipase is useful when someone exhibits symptoms suggestive of pancreas problems, such as severe abdominal pain, fever, nausea, and vomiting. It is also helpful in monitoring individuals with known pancreatic disorders or in evaluating the effectiveness of treatment.
An elevated level of Amylase and/or Lipase in the blood usually indicates pancreatic inflammation or other pancreatic problems. This test aids in diagnosing the condition and in monitoring its severity and progress.
A high level of Amylase and Lipase may indicate acute or chronic pancreatitis, gallstones, or other conditions affecting the pancreas. This often requires further medical evaluation and treatment.
Although a low level of these enzymes is less common, it can indicate a damaged pancreas with reduced function or other conditions. Low levels may also be normal and not cause for concern.

It varies per analysis: from same-day to a few working days. Standard values often come back quickly; analyses that go to an external lab can take a bit longer. You get an email with a link to your digital result, including a short explanation per value.

Amylase en lipase zijn standaard-bepalingen in Nederlandse zorgrichtlijnen voor de diagnostiek van alvleesklieraandoeningen, met name acute pancreatitis. Deze enzymen worden routinematig gebruikt bij verdenking op alvleesklierproblemen en zijn opgenomen in diagnostische protocollen voor buikpijn en acute situaties. De klinische betekenis en interpretatie zijn goed gevestigd binnen de reguliere geneeskunde.
