Androstanediol-glucuronide, also known as 3α-diol, is a metabolite of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a potent form of testosterone. This hormone plays a crucial role in male development and health, but is found in the body of both men and women. The concentration of 3α-diol in the blood can provide insight into hormonal balance and the activity of androgens (male hormones) in the body.
The test for 3α-diol is useful for evaluating androgen activity in the body. It can help in diagnosing conditions related to hormonal imbalances, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in women, androgen excess, or when investigating the cause of infertility, acne, and abnormal hair growth (hirsutism). In men, it can be helpful in evaluating androgen deficiency or testosterone metabolism.
The amount of Androstanediol-glucuronide in the blood provides insight into the amount of active androgens in the body. It can help identify hormonal imbalances that contribute to various health issues, including metabolic disorders, reproductive problems, and the development of certain hormone-sensitive conditions.
A high level of 3α-diol may indicate increased androgen activity or production in the body. The scientific support for this test within mainstream Dutch healthcare is limited. The test is not included in NHG/FMS standard guidelines.
Rationale for this test
Deze test meet een metaboliet van dihydrotestosteron (DHT) en kan inzicht geven in androgeenactiviteit. De wetenschappelijke onderbouwing voor deze test binnen de Nederlandse reguliere zorg is beperkt. De test is niet opgenomen in de standaard-richtlijnen van NHG of FMS voor de genoemde indicaties zoals PCOS, hirsutisme of onvruchtbaarheid. In onderzoekssetting wordt de marker gebruikt, maar de klinische betekenis voor individuele patiënten buiten onderzoekscontext is onzeker.
