Diphtheria antitoxins are antibodies directed against the toxin produced by the bacterium Corynebacterium diphtheriae, the causative agent of diphtheria. Diphtheria is a serious infectious disease that primarily affects the throat and upper respiratory tract, but the toxin can also damage heart, nerve, and kidney tissue. Measuring diphtheria antitoxins can provide insight into immunity against this disease.
Testing for diphtheria antitoxins is recommended to determine whether someone is sufficiently immunized against diphtheria. This can be particularly important for individuals traveling to areas where diphtheria is still prevalent, working in healthcare, or having specific medical conditions that increase their susceptibility to infectious diseases.
The presence and quantity of diphtheria antitoxins in the blood indicate the level of immunity against diphtheria. A sufficient level suggests that the individual is protected against the disease, while low levels may indicate that a booster vaccination is needed.
A high level of diphtheria antitoxins indicates good immunity against diphtheria, meaning that the individual is currently protected against the infection.

At most collection points yes. Some accept walk-ins. This is clearly indicated per location. You choose the location that works best for you.

It varies per analysis: from same-day to a few working days. Standard values often come back quickly; analyses that go to an external lab can take a bit longer. You get an email with a link to your digital result, including a short explanation per value.

Rationale for this test
Deze test meet de bescherming tegen difterie door het niveau van antitoxinen in het bloed te bepalen. Difterie-vaccinatie maakt deel uit van het Nederlandse Rijksvaccinatieprogramma en het meten van antitoxinen is een gevestigde methode om de immuniteit te controleren. De test wordt gebruikt om te bepalen of een boostervaccinatie nodig is, bijvoorbeeld bij reizigers naar endemische gebieden of zorgmedewerkers.
