Estrone, also known as E1, is a form of estrogen, an important female sex hormone. It plays a crucial role in the menstrual cycle and fertility in women and is also present in smaller quantities in men.
Testing estrone is useful for evaluating hormone balance and fertility, diagnosing certain health conditions such as estrogen dominance, early puberty or menopause, and monitoring hormone-related therapies. It can also provide insight into the hormonal health of men.
Estrone levels provide insight into estrogen production in the body. It helps in diagnosing hormonal imbalances that may point to various health issues, including fertility problems, and conditions related to the thyroid or adrenal glands.
A high estrone level may indicate increased estrogen production, which may point to various disorders, such as estrogen dominance, or liver conditions. In men, it may indicate gynecomastia or hormonal imbalances.
A low estrone level may indicate reduced estrogen production, which may suggest premature ovarian insufficiency, menopause, or pituitary gland issues. In men, a low level may be normal, but it can also point to certain health problems.

It varies per analysis: from same-day to a few working days. Standard values often come back quickly; analyses that go to an external lab can take a bit longer. You get an email with a link to your digital result, including a short explanation per value.

Rationale for this test
Oestron (E1) is een gevalideerde hormoonbepaling die in de Nederlandse klinische praktijk wordt gebruikt voor specifieke indicaties zoals vruchtbaarheidsdiagnostiek en hormonale stoornissen. De test is opgenomen in de NVKC Wie Doet Wat Database en wordt door geaccrediteerde laboratoria uitgevoerd. De klinische betekenis is echter sterk afhankelijk van de context: bij vrouwen met vruchtbaarheidsproblemen of verdenking op hormonale onevenwichtigheden heeft de test diagnostische waarde, maar als algemene screening zonder specifieke klachten is de interpretatie beperkt en kan leiden tot onduidelijke bevindingen.
