This test is crucial for individuals for whom a previous test indicated a possible Borrelia infection. It is particularly useful in confirming a recent infection, allowing for early treatment which can prevent long-term complications.
A positive result on the Borrelia Blot (IgM) test indicates a recent infection with the Borrelia bacterium. This confirms the presence of antibodies specific to an early phase of Lyme disease.
A high level of IgM antibodies in this test indicates an active, recent infection with the Borrelia bacterium, suggesting that the individual is in the early stages of Lyme disease.
A low or undetectable IgM level in the context of this test may indicate that the individual has not been recently infected with the Borrelia bacterium, or that the initial positive test was a false-positive result.

Rationale for this test
Deze test is een standaard-bevestigingstest in de Nederlandse richtlijnen voor lymeziekte. Na een positieve screeningstest wordt de Borrelia IgM-immunoblot gebruikt om een recente infectie te bevestigen. De test is opgenomen in de CBO-richtlijn lymeziekte en wordt aanbevolen door het RIVM voor de diagnostiek van vroege Lyme-infecties.
