This test detects antibodies against the Borrelia burgdorferi bacterium, the causative agent of Lyme disease. A distinction is made between IgM and IgG antibodies, which respectively indicate a recent or an older infection.
This test is useful when you experience symptoms that may point to Lyme disease, such as fatigue, rash, fever, or joint pain, especially if you have recently been bitten by a tick. It assists in confirming the diagnosis of Lyme.
A positive result for IgM antibodies indicates a recent infection, while IgG antibodies point to a longer-standing infection. This distinction is crucial for determining treatment.
A high level of IgM antibodies suggests a recent infection with the Borrelia bacterium, while a high level of IgG antibodies indicates previous exposure or a longer-standing infection.
A low level of antibodies, or a negative result, may mean that there is no Borrelia bacterium infection, or that the infection has not been present long enough to produce detectable levels of antibodies.

Rationale for this test
Deze test is een standaard-bevestigingstest in de Nederlandse richtlijn voor lymeziekte. De immunoblot (Western blot) wordt gebruikt als tweede stap na een positieve of twijfelachtige EIA-screening om de diagnose te bevestigen. De test detecteert IgM- en IgG-antilichamen tegen Borrelia burgdorferi en is opgenomen in de multidisciplinaire richtlijn lymeziekte van het RIVM en de richtlijnendatabase.
