What is Bilirubin?
Bilirubin is a yellow pigment substance that is created during the breakdown of red blood cells. It is normally processed by the liver and excreted via feces. Measuring bilirubin helps evaluate liver function and the breakdown of red blood cells.
Why should you have Bilirubin tested?
Testing bilirubin is useful for monitoring the health of your liver and for diagnosing jaundice (a yellow discoloration of the skin and eyes). It can also assist in detecting blood disorders, bile duct obstructions, and in monitoring certain conditions.
What does it indicate?
A bilirubin test measures the amount of bilirubin in your blood. It provides insights into how well your liver breaks down red blood cells and how it removes bilirubin from your body.
What does a high bilirubin level mean?
A high level of bilirubin may indicate problems with the liver, such as hepatitis or cirrhosis, an obstruction in the bile ducts, or an excessive breakdown of red blood cells. It can also cause jaundice.
What does a low bilirubin level mean?
A low bilirubin level is usually not a cause for concern and is often not considered a problem. However, in rare cases, it may point to certain medical conditions.
