Fingerstick – instructions

With the fingerstick kit you can easily collect a blood sample at home. Below you’ll find what’s in the kit, the step‑by‑step process, and practical tips.

Your kit includes everything needed for a safe, clear collection.

  • Sterile single‑use lancets
  • Alcohol wipe
  • Collection microtainer with label
  • Tube stand
  • Return envelope

How it works

Washing hands

1.Wash your hands

Wash your hands with warm water.

Warming hands

2.Dry and warm

Dry and warm your hands for 2–5 minutes (rub or keep them warm).

Tube in stand

3.Set up the tube

Place the collection tube upright in the stand.

Choosing puncture site

4.Choose the site

Choose the side of the ring or middle finger; these usually give the best flow.

Massaging blood to fingertip

5.Bring blood to fingertip

Gently massage blood towards the fingertip; avoid strong squeezing (don’t force fluid).

Cleaning with alcohol wipe

6.Disinfect

Clean the puncture site with the alcohol wipe and let it dry.

Removing lancet cap

7.Remove cap

Remove the cap from the lancet (medical fingerstick device).

Pressing and activating lancet

8.Puncture

Press the lancet firmly onto the site and activate in one motion.

Collecting blood into tube

9.Collect

Guide the blood drops into the tube; keep the tube stable in the stand.

Filling up to the marks

10.Fill

Fill at least up to the marks on the tube.

Gently inverting tube

11.Close & invert

Close the tube and gently invert it a few times.

Checking cap closure

12.Check

Verify the cap is fully closed.

Tube back in stand

13.Back in stand

Place the tube back upright in the stand.

Tube into seal bag

14.Seal bag

Put the tube in the seal bag and close it well.

Seal bag in return envelope

15.Medical envelope

Place the seal bag into the medical return envelope.

Posting sample in mailbox

16.Send

Post via the orange PostNL mailboxes (ideally Mon–Thu).

Tips for a smooth collection

  • Take your time; read the instructions first.
  • Warm your hands to improve flow.
  • Prick on the side of the fingertip (less sensitive, better flow).
  • Gently massage towards the fingertip; don’t squeeze hard.
  • Close the tube immediately and check the label.
