Bij deze test worden van een man de hormonen oestradiol, testosteron en DHEA gemeten in speeksel. Niet alleen voor de bijnierschorshormonen cortisol en DHEA, maar ook voor de bepaling van de geslachtshormonen oestradiol, progesteron en testosteron is de concentratiebepaling in speeksel zinvol.
In gebonden vorm zijn hormonen inactief. Voor de vaststelling van specifieke hormonale activiteiten is het daarom belangrijk om de concentratie vrije hormonen te bepalen. Ongeveer 95 tot 99% van de bijnierschorshormonen in bloed is aan eiwitten gebonden (bijvoorbeeld CBG (corticosteroïd-bindend globuline), SHBG (geslachtshormoon-bindend globuline) en albumine). In speeksel daarentegen is dit slechts 1-5%.

No eating, drinking, smoking or brushing teeth in the 30 minutes before collection. That gives the most reliable hormone values.
Yes for hormone tests like a cortisol day-profile — usually 4 moments spread across the day. Exact timings are in the instructions with your kit. Label tubes clearly with the time so the lab can identify them.
Spit gently into the tube up to the indicated fill line (~1ml). Don't blow or breathe forcefully — foam interferes with analysis. If you produce a lot of foam, tap the tube gently to settle it before continuing.
Rinse your mouth with water and wait 5 minutes. Don't use chewing gum or lemon — those interfere with hormone values.
Saliva analyses typically take about a week after the lab receives your sample. You get an email with a link to your digital result, including explanation per value.

Rationale for this test
Hormoonbepaling in speeksel voor oestradiol, testosteron en DHEA wordt binnen de Nederlandse reguliere geneeskunde niet als standaard-diagnostiek erkend. De Nederlandse zorgrichtlijnen schrijven voor deze hormonen bloedonderzoek voor, niet speekselonderzoek. De claim dat speeksel 'vrije hormonen' meet en daarom zinvoller is dan bloedonderzoek, is niet onderbouwd in NHG- of FMS-richtlijnen.
Do not interpret a result from this test as a diagnosis, and always discuss with your GP which regular diagnostics are appropriate for your symptoms.
