Leukocytes, or white blood cells (WBC), are cells in our blood that are essential for the immune system. They help protect the body against infections, diseases, and other foreign substances.
Testing leukocytes is useful for assessing the general health of the immune system and for checking for possible infections, inflammatory diseases, and certain blood disorders. It can also be part of a routine health check.
The number of leukocytes in the blood provides insight into the state of the immune system. Abnormalities may indicate the presence of infections, inflammatory processes, a reaction to medication, and, in rare cases, blood cancer.
A high leukocyte count, known as leukocytosis, can indicate an infection, inflammation, stress, trauma, allergies, or diseases such as leukemia.
A low leukocyte count, known as leukopenia, can be a sign of a suppressed immune system, possibly due to viral infections, certain medications, hereditary conditions, or more serious conditions such as bone marrow problems.
