The Antistreptolysin Titer (ASO titer) measures the amount of antibodies in the blood produced against streptolysin, a toxin made by group A streptococcal bacteria. This test helps in diagnosing a recent streptococcal infection, such as strep throat or scarlet fever.
Testing the ASO titer is useful for determining whether a recent infection with streptococcal bacteria might be the cause of symptoms such as a sore throat, fever, or more complex conditions like acute rheumatic fever or glomerulonephritis, a type of kidney disease.
An elevated ASO titer indicates a recent infection with streptococci. It helps physicians identify the cause of certain symptoms and can contribute to the diagnosis of post-streptococcal conditions.
A high ASO titer suggests a recent or active infection with streptococci. It may indicate complications caused by the bacteria, such as rheumatic fever or glomerulonephritis, especially if there are no clear symptoms of strep throat.
A low ASO titer suggests that there has been no recent streptococcal infection. It can also mean that an infection occurred longer ago, and the body has already reduced the antibodies.
