The gut microbiome is a combination of billions of bacteria, fungi, and viruses that naturally live in the gut. It develops with us throughout our lives and is influenced by our genes, diet, and environment. When the different species in the gut microbiome no longer work together symbiotically, an imbalance called dysbiosis develops. This means that pathogenic microbes grow in larger numbers than the "good" microbes. Dysbiosis is associated with gut conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, celiac disease, and inflammatory bowel diseases, and with other conditions such as obesity, metabolic disorders, heart disease, allergies, and asthma.
The Dysbiosis organic acid screening for yeasts and bacteria measures the amount of certain organic acids from the first urine voided in the morning. These acids are produced by microorganisms in our gut and consist of toxic breakdown products, the organic acids, which are excreted via the kidneys (see Table 1). The organic acids investigated are: p-hydroxybenzoic acid, benzoic acid, dihydroxy-phenylpropionic acid, hippuric acid, tricarballylic acid, tartaric acid, citramalic acid, p-hydroxyphenylacetic acid, m-hydroxyphenylacetic acid, p-cresol, indican and d-arabinitol.

Insufficient evidence in mainstream medicine
The underlying condition or the clinical significance of this test is insufficiently supported within mainstream Dutch medicine.
Rationale for this test
Het concept 'dysbiose' als meetbare entiteit via organische zuren in urine is niet opgenomen in Nederlandse zorgrichtlijnen (NHG, FMS). De wetenschappelijke onderbouwing voor deze testmethode als diagnosticum voor darmklachten ontbreekt binnen de reguliere geneeskunde. Bij klachten die passen bij het prikkelbare darm syndroom of andere darmaandoeningen zijn andere diagnostische stappen geïndiceerd.
Do not interpret a result from this test as a diagnosis, and always discuss with your GP which regular diagnostics are appropriate for your symptoms.

After ordering we ship the collection kit to your home. You collect urine following the instructions, return it in the envelope, and receive your result digitally by email.
How do I collect my urine sample correctly?
Follow the included instructions, usually the midstream method in a sterile container. Pay attention to the right timing (first morning urine or random, depending on the test).
Do I need to avoid anything before collection?
For some tests yes (e.g. certain foods or supplements). Whether this applies is stated in the instructions. Read them before you start.
When and how do I receive my result?
Usually 2 to 5 working days after the lab receives your sample. You get an email with a link to your digital result, including explanation per value.
How do I return my sample to the lab?
In the included return envelope with free medical shipping. Drop it in the mailbox; the lab processes your sample as soon as it arrives. For some tests it's important to send it the same day — the instructions make this clear.
What if I have questions or something doesn't work?
Feel free to contact us via WhatsApp, email or phone. We're happy to help you before, during or after your test. If the collection doesn't work, we'll arrange a solution or send new materials — no hassle.
