Estriol (E3) is one of the three main estrogens that occur naturally in the human body. It is especially significant during pregnancy, as it is produced in large quantities by the placenta. Outside of pregnancy, the levels of free estriol in the blood are relatively low. Also known as estradiol and estrogen.
Testing for free estriol can be important for monitoring the health of both the mother and the fetus during pregnancy. It can also be useful in assessing placental function and checking for certain conditions in non-pregnant women, such as ovarian dysfunction or certain forms of cancer.
Estriol levels can provide insight into the status of fetal development and placental health during pregnancy. Outside of pregnancy, abnormal levels may suggest gynecological health issues, including potential problems with the ovaries or rare forms of cancer.
A high level of free estriol during pregnancy is usually considered a positive sign, indicating a healthy placenta and fetal development. Outside of pregnancy, however, a high level may indicate certain health problems, such as tumors or ovarian dysfunction.
A low level of free estriol during pregnancy may be an indication of potential complications, such as reduced placental function or fetal development problems. Outside of pregnancy, low levels may indicate menopause or reduced ovarian function.
