Factor V Leiden is a genetic variant that causes an increased risk of thrombosis, or blood clots. The Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test detects the presence of this mutation in the DNA, allowing determination of whether an individual has an increased risk of blood clotting disorders.
Important: For this test, you will need to complete a consent form as required by law, in which you give permission for genetic research, which the Factor V Leiden test effectively is, as it checks for a mutation.
Testing for Factor V Leiden is recommended for individuals with a personal or family history of deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, or unexplained miscarriages. It is also useful for those who want to know their risk of blood clots, especially if they are considering hormone therapy or surgery that may increase the risk of thrombosis.
The presence of the Factor V Leiden mutation indicates an increased risk of abnormal blood clotting. It assists in determining the necessary level of preventive measures or treatments to minimize the risk of blood clots.
A positive result means that the person is a carrier of the Factor V Leiden mutation, which increases the risk of thrombosis. This may require adjustments in lifestyle, medical monitoring, or preventive treatment to reduce the risk of blood clots.
A negative result means that the tested person does not carry the Factor V Leiden mutation. While this reduces the risk of thrombosis related to this specific genetic mutation, it does not exclude other possible causes of increased clotting risk.
This test is included in Dutch healthcare guidelines and is regularly used for its respective indications.
