Hb Electrophoresis is a blood test used to identify and quantify different types of hemoglobin (Hb) in the blood. Hemoglobin is a protein in red blood cells that transports oxygen throughout the body.
This test is useful for diagnosing blood disorders such as sickle cell anemia, thalassemia, or other hemoglobinopathies. It can also be used to identify carriers of these diseases, which is particularly helpful for family planning and prenatal screening.
Hb Electrophoresis helps determine the presence and quantity of abnormal hemoglobin variants in the blood, which can be indicative of certain genetic or acquired blood disorders.
A high level of abnormal hemoglobin can indicate a blood disorder such as sickle cell disease or a form of thalassemia. It suggests that a significant amount of abnormal hemoglobin is being produced by the body, which can affect the function of red blood cells.
A low level of abnormal hemoglobin may suggest that the person is a carrier of a genetic disorder without having the disorder themselves. It can also indicate the absence of a hemoglobinopathy.
This test is included in Dutch healthcare guidelines and is regularly used for its respective indications.

Hb-elektroforese is een standaard-diagnostische test in de Nederlandse zorgrichtlijnen voor het opsporen van hemoglobinopathieën zoals sikkelcelziekte en thalassemie. De test wordt expliciet genoemd in de NHG-richtlijnen voor preconceptiezorg bij verhoogde kans op hemoglobinopathie en is onderdeel van het gestandaardiseerde diagnostische protocol van de NVKC. De klinische betekenis en diagnostische waarde zijn goed onderbouwd binnen de reguliere geneeskunde.

At most collection points yes. Some accept walk-ins. This is clearly indicated per location. You choose the location that works best for you.
