Oestrogenen worden door hydroxilatie, sulfatie, methylatie of glucoronidase in de lever verwerkt tot zogenaamde metabolieten (stofwisselingsproducten). Dit zijn wateroplosbare vormen van oestrogeen, zodat het hormoon kan worden uitgescheiden via urine en ontlasting. Oestrogeen zelf is een vetachtige stof en kan daarom niet direct worden uitgescheiden.
Er zijn vijf metabolieten van oestrogeen. Deze vijf metabolieten hebben echter nog steeds een oestrogene werking. De ene metaboliet werkt krachtiger en specifieker dan de ander.

16aOH-oestron
Deze hormonen sturen celdeling in oestrogeengevoelige cellen aan.
Niet actieve metabolieten:
2 methoxy-oestron
4 methoxy-oestron
Deze metabolieten kunnen wel een oestrogeenreceptor bezetten en verhinderen daarmee dat de actieve metabolieten zorgen voor celdeling.
