About PSA testing: screening vs. indication
Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) is a protein produced by the prostate gland. It is present in small quantities in the blood of all men, but higher levels can indicate prostate problems, including enlargement of the prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia), or inflammation of the prostate (prostatitis).
A PSA test is recommended for men who experience symptoms that may indicate prostate problems, such as difficulty urinating, pain in the pelvic area, or blood in the urine.
The PSA test measures the concentration of PSA in the blood. A low PSA value is considered normal and suggests that serious prostate problems are unlikely. A higher PSA value may indicate benign prostatic hyperplasia, or prostatitis, but must be further investigated with additional tests.
A high PSA level can be a sign of prostate problems, such as an enlarged prostate or an infection. Further diagnostic tests, such as a biopsy, may be necessary to determine the cause of the high PSA value.
A low PSA level is a good sign and suggests that the risk of serious prostate problems is low. However, it does not mean there is no risk of prostate problems, so regular checkups are recommended.
This test has clinical value for specific complaints or indications, but is not intended as screening without symptoms.
Rationale for this test
PSA is een gevestigde test binnen de Nederlandse reguliere geneeskunde voor de diagnostiek van prostaatproblemen bij mannen met klachten. De test is opgenomen in de Nederlandse richtlijnen voor prostaatcarcinoom-diagnostiek. PSA is echter niet geschikt als screening-test voor mannen zonder klachten, omdat de specificiteit beperkt is en verhoogde waarden ook kunnen wijzen op goedaardige aandoeningen zoals prostaatvergroting of ontsteking. De klinische betekenis van een PSA-waarde moet altijd worden beoordeeld in samenhang met leeftijd, klachten en eventueel aanvullend onderzoek.

After ordering we generate a referral letter and email you the instructions. You pick a collection point yourself and book an appointment there. Blood is drawn at the location, processed at the lab, and your result arrives digitally.
Often within a few working days. How soon you can be seen depends on how busy the location is and the type of analysis. For specialist analyses we first ship collection materials, which takes a bit longer.
At most collection points yes. Some accept walk-ins. This is clearly indicated per location. You choose the location that works best for you.
That depends on the test. Whether fasting is required, and from what time, is clearly stated in the instructions you receive after ordering. No surprises at the counter.
It varies per analysis: from same-day to a few working days. Standard values often come back quickly; analyses that go to an external lab can take a bit longer. You get an email with a link to your digital result, including a short explanation per value.
