Free Prostate-Specific Antigen (Free PSA) is a protein produced exclusively by the prostate gland. It is a form of PSA that is not bound to other proteins in the blood. Measuring the level of free PSA helps in assessing prostate health and can be used in combination with the total PSA test to better estimate the risk of prostate cancer.
Testing Free PSA is particularly useful for men who have an elevated total PSA value. It helps in distinguishing between prostate cancer and other prostate conditions, such as prostate enlargement or inflammation, which can also cause an elevation in PSA levels. By measuring the free PSA level, the necessity of further invasive examinations, such as a prostate biopsy, can be better assessed.
A ratio of free PSA to total PSA can help in assessing the risk of prostate cancer. A lower ratio generally indicates a higher risk of prostate cancer, while a higher ratio may point more toward benign (non-cancerous) prostate conditions.
A high level of free PSA relative to total PSA may indicate a lower risk of prostate cancer. It possibly indicates the presence of benign prostate conditions.
A low level of free PSA relative to total PSA may be an indication of a higher risk of prostate cancer. This may be a sign that further investigation is necessary to rule out or confirm prostate cancer.
