About PSA testing: screening vs. indication
What is PSA?
PSA, or Prostate-Specific Antigen, is a protein primarily produced by the prostate gland. The level of PSA in the blood can aid in the detection of prostate conditions.
Why should you test PSA?
Testing PSA levels can be particularly useful for men above a certain age or for those with a family history of prostate issues. Monitoring changes in PSA levels can be informative when evaluating prostate-related symptoms.
What does it indicate?
PSA levels in the blood can provide an indication of prostate health. While not every increase in PSA suggests a serious condition, higher levels can be a sign of an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia), or prostate inflammation (prostatitis).
What does a high PSA level mean?
A high PSA level may indicate benign prostatic hyperplasia or prostatitis. It is important to remember that PSA levels can also temporarily increase due to other factors, such as certain medical procedures, a urinary tract infection, or even intense physical activity.
What does a low PSA level mean?
A low PSA level is generally seen as an indication of a healthy prostate. It suggests that there are currently likely no significant prostate issues. However, it is important to continue regular check-ups, as PSA levels can change over time.

Rationale for this test
PSA-bepaling is een gevestigde test binnen de Nederlandse reguliere zorg voor mannen met prostaatklachten of verhoogd risico. De test is opgenomen in NHG-richtlijnen voor diagnostiek bij specifieke indicaties. Als screening zonder klachten bij asymptomatische mannen is de test echter niet geschikt, omdat de interpretatie sterk afhankelijk is van leeftijd, klachten en risicoprofiel.

After ordering we ship the collection kit to your home. You prick your fingertip, collect a few drops of blood, return it in the envelope, and receive your result digitally by email.
How do I collect my blood sample?
A small prick on your fingertip lets you collect a few drops into a tube. The instructions include step-by-step photos and video, so no guessing required.
When and how do I receive my result?
Usually 2 to 5 working days after the lab receives your sample. You get an email with a link to your digital result, including explanation per value.
What if the collection doesn't work?
Some people find the fingerstick tricky at first. Warm your hands, hang your arm down, and prick the side of the fingertip for better blood flow. If it still doesn't work, get in touch.
How do I return my sample to the lab?
In the included return envelope with free medical shipping. Drop it in the mailbox; the lab processes your sample as soon as it arrives. For some tests it's important to send it the same day — the instructions make this clear.
What if I have questions or something doesn't work?
Feel free to contact us via WhatsApp, email or phone. We're happy to help you before, during or after your test. If the collection doesn't work, we'll arrange a solution or send new materials — no hassle.
