Chronic Q-fever is a long-term infection caused by the bacterium Coxiella Burnetii. Unlike the acute form, which is often mild and sometimes goes unnoticed, chronic Q-fever can cause serious complications, such as infections of the heart (endocarditis), blood vessels, and liver damage.
Testing for chronic Q-fever is recommended for individuals previously diagnosed with acute Q-fever but whose symptoms persist or recur, especially if they are at risk of complications such as heart problems. It is also important for early detection and treatment to prevent severe health issues.
A test for chronic Q-fever measures the presence and levels of antibodies against Coxiella Burnetii in the blood, indicating a persistent infection. Higher antibody levels may suggest a chronic infection, which requires more intensive treatment.
High levels of specific antibodies against Coxiella Burnetii indicate an active chronic Q-fever infection. This requires immediate medical attention, as chronic Q-fever can cause serious and life-threatening complications.
Low levels of antibodies may indicate an early infection, successful treatment of chronic Q-fever, or a latent infection that needs close monitoring to prevent possible reactivation.
