Thyroxine-binding globulin (TBG) is a protein produced by the liver that plays a crucial role in the transport of thyroid hormones in the blood. TBG binds the thyroid hormones T3 and T4, allowing them to travel through the body to where they are needed.
A TBG test is useful for assessing how much TBG is available in the blood for the transport of thyroid hormones. This is particularly relevant for diagnosing thyroid disorders, evaluating hormonal imbalance, and in situations where thyroid hormone levels do not align with the patient’s clinical symptoms.
The TBG test measures the amount of thyroxine-binding globulin in the blood. An deviation from the normal TBG values can indicate problems with thyroid function or with the amount of available proteins for hormone transport.
A high TBG level may indicate an increased capacity for binding thyroid hormones, which can occur in certain genetic conditions, during pregnancy, or as a result of high estrogen levels. It may also indicate reduced thyroid function.
A low TBG level may indicate a reduced capacity for transporting thyroid hormones. This can be seen with high testosterone levels, when using certain medications, or in the case of liver disorders. It may also indicate increased thyroid function.
