The Soluble Transferrin Receptor (sTfR) is a biomarker that circulates in the blood and plays a role in iron transport in the body. It reflects the amount of transferrin receptor that detaches from the cell surface, which is directly related to the body's iron requirement.
Testing sTfR is useful for assessing the body's iron status, especially in cases where other tests such as serum iron or ferritin may not provide a clear picture. It is particularly useful in diagnosing iron deficiency or in distinguishing iron deficiency anemia from other forms of anemia.
An sTfR test indicates the amount of iron available for red blood cell production. It helps determine whether the body has enough iron for normal blood formation and reveals iron deficiency before it becomes apparent in standard blood tests.
A high level of sTfR indicates an increased need for iron or a lack of iron in the body. This may suggest iron deficiency anemia or increased erythropoiesis (red blood cell production).
This test has clinical value for specific complaints or indications, but is not intended as screening without symptoms.
Rationale for this test
Deze test heeft klinische waarde bij het onderscheiden van ijzertekortanemie van andere vormen van anemie, vooral wanneer ontstekingsparameters de interpretatie van ferritine bemoeilijken. De test wordt gebruikt in gespecialiseerde diagnostiek binnen de Nederlandse zorg, maar is geen standaard eerste-lijns bepaling. Voor de meeste mensen met vermoeden van ijzertekort zijn standaard ijzerparameters (ferritine, Hb, MCV) voldoende.

Often within a few working days. How soon you can be seen depends on how busy the location is and the type of analysis. For specialist analyses we first ship collection materials, which takes a bit longer.
At most collection points yes. Some accept walk-ins. This is clearly indicated per location. You choose the location that works best for you.
That depends on the test. Whether fasting is required, and from what time, is clearly stated in the instructions you receive after ordering. No surprises at the counter.
It varies per analysis: from same-day to a few working days. Standard values often come back quickly; analyses that go to an external lab can take a bit longer. You get an email with a link to your digital result, including a short explanation per value.
