This test measures

  • Alfa-1-Antitrypsine

Indication: Detection of intestinal inflammations, Leaky Gut Syndrome, and food intolerances.

Alpha-1-antitrypsin (α-1-antitrypsin) is an anti-inflammatory agent, produced in liver and intestinal cells. The liver produces 2 grams per day.

It is an acute-phase protein that, among other things, inhibits inflammatory enzymes and has anti-proteolytic effects. For example, α-1-antitrypsin inhibits the action of the enzyme elastase. Elastase breaks down elastin, an important component of connective tissue. Alpha-1-antitrypsin is measured in feces and is highly suitable for detecting inflammations at a very early stage.

NB: Alpha-1-antitrypsin increases over time as inflammation increases. However, α-1-antitrypsin will decrease if the inflammation increases beyond what α-1-antitrypsin can control. Therefore, the analytical value should always be assessed alongside inflammatory markers such as calprotectin, PMN Elastase, lysozyme, wrCRP and lactoferrin.

Interpretation of test results

Elevated value

There is anti-inflammatory activity. Therefore, inflammatory processes are ongoing against which alpha-1-antitrypsin is deployed as an anti-inflammatory agent. This may indicate the presence of intestinal inflammations (ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease), food intolerances (celiac disease), or increased permeability of the intestinal epithelium (Leaky Gut Syndrome)

Low value

A low value of alpha-1-antitrypsin indicates that there is no anti-inflammatory activity. Therefore, no inflammatory reactions are ongoing, or the inflammatory reactions are greater than the anti-inflammatory capacity. Alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency can lead to pulmonary emphysema and, to a lesser extent, liver cirrhosis.

Useful additional diagnostics

-Qualitative Inflammation package (hemoglobin, transferrin, calprotectin, lactoferrin)
-Calprotectin (quantitative)
-PMN Elastase

Insufficient evidence in mainstream medicine

The underlying condition or the clinical significance of this test is insufficiently supported within mainstream Dutch medicine.

Rationale for this test

Do not interpret a result from this test as a diagnosis, and always discuss with your GP which regular diagnostics are appropriate for your symptoms.

How does the stool test work from A to Z?

After ordering we ship the kit to your home. You collect a small sample with the included scoop, keep it cool and return it in the envelope. You receive the result digitally by email.

How do I collect a clean sample?

Lay plastic film over the toilet or use a clean container. Scoop from the middle of the stool and avoid contact with urine or toilet water.

How much stool do I need?

A small scoop with the included spoon is enough — about half a teaspoon. More is not better.

How long can I keep the sample before shipping?

Maximum 24 to 48 hours in the fridge. Send as soon as possible and preferably early in the week, not just before the weekend.

Should I avoid medication or food before collection?

Some analyses (like calprotectin) ask you to avoid NSAIDs or certain supplements 24-48 hours before collection. Check the instructions with your kit for the exact preparation for your test.

When and how do I receive my result?

Stool analyses typically take about a week after the lab receives your sample. You receive your laboratory report securely by email. It lists the measured values, units, reference ranges and any flags added by the laboratory.

How do I return the collection materials to the lab?

Use the supplied return envelope and place it in the letter-mail bag inside a PostNL service point yourself as soon as possible. Do not hand it to counter staff or request track & trace. The instructions supplied with your test state when it must be sent.

What if I have questions or something doesn't work?

Feel free to contact us via WhatsApp, email or phone. We're happy to help you before, during or after your test. If the collection doesn't work, we'll arrange a solution or send new materials — no hassle.

Amazing website experience. I ordered various tests for 2 people. We went to one of the supported centers and took samples. Also after the results were ready, I needed a letter from the laboratory and they prepared the letter for me in no time. Definitely recommended.

“Amazing service!”

Received a packet with everything needed, went to a walk in clinic (Amsterdam DC Clinic) where my blood was drawn and I was out the door within 5 minutes, and then after posting the samples, received results 2 days later. Results were easy to understand as well. Amazing service, would highly recommend!
