Een ontstekingsremmend eiwit dat vrijkomt wanneer bepaalde witte bloedcellen (neutrofiele granulocyten) sterven. Het bindt calcium en zink. Bovendien deactiveert het de microbiële enzymen waardoor de antibacteriële werking tegen schadelijke micro-organismen wordt onderdrukt.
