In case of gluten intolerance, the body forms antibodies against gluten (anti-gliadin IgA) and also against its own body structures (anti-transglutaminase IgA), which can then be detected in the stool. An elevated level of anti-transglutaminase in the stool is characteristic of patients with celiac disease. The anti-transglutaminase test is performed to confirm an elevated anti-gliadin level.
There is much evidence for the statement that Dühring's disease, a rare inflammatory skin disease with a herpes-like character (dermatitis herpetiformis), is a symptom of celiac disease. Research is being conducted to determine whether other skin conditions, such as psoriasis, are also related to gluten intolerance. In several studies, an elevated level of anti-gliadin IgA was also found in people with psoriasis. For diseases that are known to be caused by gluten, such as celiac disease and Dühring's disease, improvement occurs when a gluten-free diet is followed. According to some practitioners, diet can have a significant influence on the symptoms of ADHD, for example, when a gluten-free, dairy-free, and sugar-free diet is adopted.
If an elevated anti-gliadin IgA level is detected in the stool, it is advisable to follow a gluten-free diet for six weeks. After that, this test is performed again. If the value is still elevated, further examination is recommended. A small bowel biopsy is one of the options.
This test is included in Dutch healthcare guidelines and is regularly used for its respective indications.

Practical information
After ordering we ship the kit to your home. You collect a small sample with the included scoop, keep it cool and return it in the envelope. You receive the result digitally by email.
Lay plastic film over the toilet or use a clean container. Scoop from the middle of the stool and avoid contact with urine or toilet water.
A small scoop with the included spoon is enough — about half a teaspoon. More is not better.
Maximum 24 to 48 hours in the fridge. Send as soon as possible and preferably early in the week, not just before the weekend.
Some analyses (like calprotectin) ask you to avoid NSAIDs or certain supplements 24-48 hours before collection. Check the instructions with your kit for the exact preparation for your test.
Stool analyses typically take about a week after the lab receives your sample. You receive your laboratory report securely by email. It lists the measured values, units, reference ranges and any flags added by the laboratory.
Use the supplied return envelope and place it in the letter-mail bag inside a PostNL service point yourself as soon as possible. Do not hand it to counter staff or request track & trace. The instructions supplied with your test state when it must be sent.
