Secretorisch immunoglobuline A (sIgA) maakt deel uit van het immuunsysteem in de darmen. Het bestaat uit twee, door een peptide gekoppelde, IgA-antilichamen. Het wordt in de darmwand geproduceerd door de plasmacellen van de ‘lamina propria’. De belangrijkste functie van IgA is het beschermen van het lichaam tegen binnendringen van allerlei ziekteverwekkers door de aanwezigheid in traanvocht, colostrum, gal en van de klieren van lucht- en urinewegen en maag-, darmstelsel. sIgA geeft duidelijkheid over de kwaliteit van het darmgeassocieerde immuunsysteem.
Een afwijkende uitslag, dus te veel of te weinig secretorisch IgA, geeft aan dat het afweermechanisme van de darmen onvoldoende functioneert.
