What is the Drug panel?
The Drug panel is a screening in a single urine sample for the most commonly used drugs and for medicines that can be addictive. For each substance or group of substances, the laboratory uses a cut-off: if the concentration is above it, that result is positive. Creatinine is measured as well to check that the urine is not too diluted.
What is tested?
- Amphetamines: speed (amphetamine) and related substances such as methamphetamine
- Cocaine: benzoylecgonine, the breakdown product of cocaine
- THC: breakdown products of cannabis (weed and hash)
- Morphine and codeine: opiates, including morphine from heroin, painkillers and poppy seeds
- Heroin (6-acetylmorphine): a breakdown product that only forms after heroin use
- Methadone (EDDP): the breakdown product of methadone
- Benzodiazepines: sleeping pills and tranquilizers such as oxazepam and diazepam
- Barbiturates: sedatives such as phenobarbital
- Creatinine: a check that the urine is not too diluted
Why should you get the Drug panel?
The panel is useful for a medical question, for example in addiction care or with unexplained symptoms in which substance use may play a role, or if you want to monitor your own use.
Do not eat poppy seeds in the 3 days before collecting the urine: they can make the opiate test positive. If you take medicines, such as painkillers, sleeping pills, tranquilizers or an ADHD medicine, keep this in mind when reading the result.
What does it indicate?
For each substance, the result shows whether it has been used recently. How long a substance is detectable differs greatly: heroin (6-acetylmorphine) about a day, most drugs a few days, cannabis and long-acting benzodiazepines sometimes weeks. The test does not show whether someone is under the influence at this moment, nor how much or how often a substance was used.
What does a positive result mean?
A substance or breakdown product was found above the cut-off. A positive result can also be caused by a medicine, for example a painkiller, a sleeping pill or tranquilizer, an epilepsy medicine or an ADHD medicine, or by poppy seeds. A screening test can occasionally be false-positive; confirmation with a different method (GC-MS or LC-MS) is not included in this test and is needed before a positive result can serve as evidence.
What does a negative result mean?
No substance was found above the cut-off. This does not completely rule out use: shortly after use, if use was longer ago or in diluted urine, a result can be negative. The panel does not look for all drugs; ecstasy (MDMA) is detected inconsistently and GHB and ketamine are not tested.
Preparation and sampling
- Do not eat poppy seeds in the 3 days before collecting, not even on bread or in pastries. Poppy seeds can give a positive result.Applies to: Morfine and Codeïne
Risks and downsides of this test
- Collecting urine. The quality of the sample depends on when and how it is collected. A wrongly collected sample can distort the result.
- No test is one hundred percent reliable. A result can point to something that is not there, or miss something that is. A result is a snapshot and does not make a diagnosis.
- An abnormal result has consequences. It can lead to follow-up tests with your GP, and to worry that turns out to be unnecessary. Follow-up tests or treatment can have downsides of their own.
- Incidental findings are not expected with this test. An incidental finding is something other than what you were looking for. During checkout you choose whether you want to be informed about one.

How does the urine test work from A to Z?
After ordering we ship the collection kit to your home. You collect urine following the instructions, return it in the envelope, and receive your result digitally by email.
How do I collect my urine sample correctly?
Follow the included instructions, usually the midstream method in a sterile container. Pay attention to the right timing (first morning urine or random, depending on the test).
Do I need to avoid anything before collection?
For some tests yes (e.g. certain foods or supplements). Whether this applies is stated in the instructions. Read them before you start.
When and how do I receive my result?
Usually 2 to 5 working days after the lab receives your sample. You receive your laboratory report securely by email. It lists the measured values, units, reference ranges and any flags added by the laboratory.
How do I return the collection materials to the lab?
Use the supplied return envelope and place it in the letter-mail bag inside a PostNL service point yourself as soon as possible. Do not hand it to counter staff or request track & trace. The instructions supplied with your test state when it must be sent.
