Q fever is caused by the bacterium Coxiella Burneti. It is an infectious disease that can affect both animals and humans. People can become infected by inhaling the bacteria, which are often spread by goats, sheep, and cows.
Testing for Q fever is important for people who work in livestock farming, veterinarians, or those living near farms. It is also recommended for people with unexplained fever, flu-like symptoms, or severe headache, especially if standard treatments fail.
A positive test for Q fever indicates a current or past infection with the Coxiella Burneti bacterium. It can help in diagnosing the cause of symptoms such as fever, fatigue, and pneumonia.
A high level of antibodies against Coxiella Burneti in the blood indicates an active or recent infection. This can lead to serious health problems, such as chronic Q fever, which can affect the heart and other organs.
A low level may indicate a previous exposure to the bacterium without an active infection. It can also mean that the person has not been exposed to the bacterium or that the infection is still in a very early stage.
