All about LDL cholesterol levels
By BloedCheckup
You have had blood drawn, and your result shows an LDL cholesterol level. What does that number mean, and when is it too high? LDL is an important value in assessing your risk for cardiovascular diseases. The result gains significance alongside your other blood levels and personal situation.
What is LDL cholesterol?
LDL stands for low-density lipoprotein. These particles transport cholesterol from the liver to other parts of the body. Cholesterol is needed for things like cell walls and hormones. However, a long-term elevated amount of LDL cholesterol can contribute to fat buildup in the vascular wall. That is why LDL is often called the 'unfavorable' cholesterol.
An elevated LDL typically does not cause noticeable symptoms. You can feel fine even when your level is elevated. A blood test makes this visible; it does not, by itself, tell you if your arteries are already narrowed.
What is a good LDL cholesterol level?
There is no threshold that means the same thing for everyone. For people without increased risk, an LDL below 3.0 mmol/l is often used as a general guideline. In the case of higher risk or existing cardiovascular disease, a lower target value may be applicable.
Situation | Explanation of the result |
|---|---|
No known increased risk | An LDL below 3.0 mmol/l is often used as a general guideline. |
Increased risk or existing cardiovascular disease | The doctor may establish a lower target value, for example, below 2.6 or 1.8 mmol/l. |
Frequently asked questions about LDL cholesterol
Can I feel elevated LDL?
Usually not. Elevated LDL generally does not cause direct symptoms. A blood test can determine the value, but it does not show whether your arteries are already narrowed.
Why is my LDL target value lower than the lab limit?
The lab limit is general. A personal target value takes into account factors like prior cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and your overall risk. Follow the target value agreed upon with your doctor.
