Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a common virus that belongs to the herpesvirus family. Most people become infected with CMV at some point in their lives. The blood test for CMV IgG and IgM antibodies helps determine if someone has been recently or previously infected with the virus. IgM antibodies indicate a recent infection, while IgG antibodies point to a past infection and long-term immunity.
Testing for CMV IgG and IgM is especially important for pregnant women, people with weakened immune systems, and those undergoing organ transplantation. A recent CMV infection can pose risks for pregnant women and their unborn children, and can also cause complications in people with weakened immune systems or following transplantation.
The presence of IgM antibodies indicates a recent CMV infection, while IgG antibodies point to a prior infection and potential immunity against the virus. The test results can assist in determining immune status and in taking preventive or therapeutic measures.
A high level of CMV IgG antibodies indicates a prior infection and suggests that the body has developed immunity against the virus. This is usually not a cause for concern.
A low or undetectable level of CMV IgM antibodies suggests that there has been no recent infection. This is usually a sign that no active CMV infection is present.
