Dengue (dengue fever) is a viral infection you can catch from a mosquito bite in (sub)tropical areas. There are four types of dengue virus. In an infection, your body first makes IgM antibodies, from about 4 days after the fever starts, and then IgG antibodies that last a long time. This test measures both.
To find out whether you have had dengue before, for example for advice on dengue vaccination before a new trip. Or with symptoms that fit dengue, such as sudden fever, headache behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain and a rash, during or within 2 weeks after a stay in the tropics. In that case, have the blood drawn only when the fever started at least 4 days ago.
Fever during or after a trip to the tropics should be assessed by a doctor the same day, among other things to rule out malaria; do not wait for this test. Mention any vaccinations against yellow fever, Japanese encephalitis, tick-borne encephalitis or dengue, because they can affect the result.
IgG points to a past infection, IgM to a possible recent infection. Because dengue is related to other viruses, such as Zika and yellow fever, antibodies against those viruses can also make the result positive.
A positive IgG with a negative IgM fits a dengue infection from longer ago, or antibodies from a related virus or a vaccination. After a first infection, the chance of severe dengue is higher if you later catch another type; this matters for the advice on vaccination.
A positive IgM may fit a recent infection, but does not prove it. A second blood draw after about 14 days, or a test for the virus itself, can confirm the infection. Severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting or bleeding gums need medical care right away.
If IgG and IgM are both negative, you have probably not had dengue yet. In the first days of fever, antibodies cannot yet be detected, so a test taken too early does not rule out an infection.
Always discuss an abnormal result with your GP. If a result is strongly abnormal, we try to reach you as soon as possible. Read your result yourself as well and contact your GP if in doubt. A test does not make a diagnosis. Read more about risks and results

Practical information
After ordering we generate a referral letter and email you the instructions. You pick a collection point yourself and book an appointment there. Blood is drawn at the location, processed at the lab, and your result arrives digitally.
Often within a few working days. How soon you can be seen depends on how busy the location is and the type of analysis. For specialist analyses we first ship collection materials, which takes a bit longer.
At most collection points yes. Some accept walk-ins. This is clearly indicated per location. You choose the location that works best for you.
That depends on the test. Whether fasting is required, and from what time, is clearly stated in the instructions you receive after ordering. No surprises at the counter.
Usually within a few working days after collection. Turnaround time varies by analysis; analyses sent to an external lab can take longer. You receive your laboratory report securely by email. It lists the measured values, units, reference ranges and any flags added by the laboratory.
