The Hantaan strain is the Asian variant of hantavirus, primarily found in China, Korea, Russia, and parts of Southeast Asia. The reservoir is the Apodemus field mouse. Infection can cause a more severe form of hantavirus disease (HFRS — Haemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome) with fever, bleeding tendency, and acute kidney impairment.
This test is intended for travelers or expats who have spent extended time in an endemic area (Korea, China, Russia) and want to know whether they have been exposed. Also relevant for suspected past HFRS after staying in a risk region. For people who have only been in the Netherlands, the Puumala test is more appropriate.
IgG antibodies against Hantaan indicate a past infection with this strain. IgG develops 2–3 weeks after infection and remains detectable for life. The strain-specific result distinguishes Hantaan from Puumala and other hantavirus variants.
An elevated IgG titer indicates a past Hantaan infection. The body has developed immunity against reinfection with this strain. For prolonged complaints (fatigue, kidney issues), follow-up with your doctor is sensible.
A low or undetectable IgG level means you have not been previously exposed to the Hantaan strain. If a recent infection is suspected (complaints less than 3 weeks), an IgM test is more appropriate, as IgM appears earlier than IgG.

It varies per analysis: from same-day to a few working days. Standard values often come back quickly; analyses that go to an external lab can take a bit longer. You get an email with a link to your digital result, including a short explanation per value.
