Hantavirus is a family of viruses transmitted by rodents through feces, urine, or saliva. The Puumala strain is the most common variant in Europe and the Netherlands, with the bank vole as the primary reservoir. An infection can lead to nephropathia epidemica — a milder form of hantavirus disease with fever, headache, and temporary kidney impairment.
The IgG test is relevant after experiencing a (suspected) hantavirus infection to confirm the diagnosis, or to determine prior exposure. Also useful for people with occupational exposure to rodents (farmers, forest and nature workers, military personnel) to assess immune status.
The presence of IgG antibodies against Puumala indicates a past infection with this strain. IgG develops 2–3 weeks after infection and remains detectable for life. The strain-specific result distinguishes Puumala from other hantavirus variants such as Hantaan.
An elevated IgG titer indicates a past Puumala infection and suggests immunity against reinfection with this strain. In most cases this is not a cause for concern, but persistent complaints (fatigue, kidney issues) warrant follow-up with your doctor.
A low or undetectable IgG level means you have likely not been previously exposed to Puumala. If a recent infection is suspected (complaints less than 3 weeks), an IgM test is more appropriate — IgM appears earlier than IgG.
Practical information
After ordering we generate a referral letter and email you the instructions. You pick a collection point yourself and book an appointment there. Blood is drawn at the location, processed at the lab, and your result arrives digitally.
Often within a few working days. How soon you can be seen depends on how busy the location is and the type of analysis. For specialist analyses we first ship collection materials, which takes a bit longer.
At most collection points yes. Some accept walk-ins. This is clearly indicated per location. You choose the location that works best for you.
That depends on the test. Whether fasting is required, and from what time, is clearly stated in the instructions you receive after ordering. No surprises at the counter.
Usually within a few working days after collection. Turnaround time varies by analysis; analyses sent to an external lab can take longer. You receive your laboratory report securely by email. It lists the measured values, units, reference ranges and any flags added by the laboratory.
