Hepatitis C is an infectious liver disease caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV). It can cause both acute and chronic hepatitis, varying in severity from a mild illness lasting a few weeks to a severe, lifelong condition.
Testing for Hepatitis C is important because many people with the virus do not experience symptoms until the liver is already damaged. Early detection can help prevent serious health problems resulting from long-term infection and can prevent the spread of the virus to others.
A Hepatitis C test looks for antibodies against HCV in your blood, which indicates whether you have ever been infected with the virus. A positive test may be further investigated to determine if the infection is active.
A high level of Hepatitis C antibodies suggests a current or previous infection. In the case of an active infection, this means the virus is still present in your body and potentially damaging your liver.
A low or non-detectable level of Hepatitis C antibodies may mean that you are not infected with the virus, or that your body has cleared the virus, which sometimes occurs with an acute Hepatitis C infection.
