A Herpes Blood Test for Past Infections detects the presence of antibodies against the herpes simplex virus in the blood. These antibodies indicate prior exposure to the virus, meaning the person was infected in the past.
This test is useful for people who want to know if they have been infected with the herpesvirus in the past, especially if they have never experienced clear symptoms. It can be important for expectant parents, people starting a new relationship, or individuals with a weakened immune system.
The test indicates whether someone has developed antibodies against the herpes virus, signifying a previous infection. It can differentiate between herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), often responsible for cold sores, and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), primarily associated with genital herpes.
A high level of antibodies in the blood indicates a past infection with the herpes virus. This means the virus may be present in the body inactively and could cause future outbreaks in some people.
A low level of antibodies means either that there has been no previous infection with the herpes virus, or that the body has not yet produced a measurable amount of antibodies. This can be the case shortly after a recent infection.
This test is included in Dutch healthcare guidelines and is regularly used for its respective indications.
