Herpes is a common virus that causes infections on the skin, mouth, or genitals. There are two main types: Herpes Simplex Virus type 1 (HSV-1), usually associated with cold sores, and type 2 (HSV-2), which primarily causes genital herpes. A blood test can detect antibodies against HSV, indicating a previous or active infection.
Testing for herpes is useful to confirm the presence of the virus in people experiencing symptoms or who have a partner with herpes. It is also valuable for people who wish to understand and manage their sexual health, especially if they are pregnant or have a compromised immune system.
The presence of antibodies against HSV-1 or HSV-2 in the blood indicates a previous or active infection. This assists in determining the virus type and offering targeted management or treatment.
A high level of antibodies against HSV suggests recent exposure to the virus or an active infection. It may also indicate a recurrent infection, especially in individuals already familiar with symptoms such as cold sores or genital ulcers.
A low level of antibodies may indicate previous exposure to the virus without active infection. In some cases, a very low or non-detectable level may suggest that the person is not infected with HSV.
