What is the Inflammation Basic Blood Test?

The Inflammation Basic Blood Test is an essential test for detecting and monitoring inflammatory processes in the body. Inflammations can be acute (infections) or chronic (autoimmune diseases, rheumatism). This test measures three important inflammatory markers that together provide a good picture of inflammatory activity. It is suitable for symptoms such as persistent fatigue, fever, painful joints, or when inflammation or infection is suspected.

What is tested?

  • CRP (C-reactive protein) – Highly sensitive acute inflammatory marker
  • Leukocytes (white blood cells) – Immune cells that are elevated during infections
  • ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate) – Classic inflammatory marker

Why should you have an Inflammation Basic test?

This test is crucial for detecting inflammations and infections. CRP rises within a few hours during acute inflammation and is very sensitive. Leukocytes are elevated in bacterial infections. ESR is useful in chronic inflammations such as rheumatism, polymyalgia rheumatica, or vasculitis. The test is used for symptoms such as fever, painful joints, fatigue, or when autoimmune diseases are suspected. Also for monitoring known inflammatory diseases and checking if treatment is effective. Fasting is not required for this test.

What does it indicate?

The results provide insight into active inflammations:

  • CRP – Indicates acute inflammation or infection
  • Leukocytes – Often indicate bacterial infection, but can also be elevated due to stress or inflammation
  • ESR – Elevated in chronic inflammations, autoimmune diseases, infections, and some cancers

The combination of these three markers helps distinguish between acute and chronic inflammation, bacterial versus viral infection, and monitor treatment. These markers are not specific but are very useful for detecting and monitoring inflammations.

What does a high level mean?

  • Elevated CRP (above 10 mg/L) – Indicates active inflammation or infection. Very high CRP (above 100 mg/L) often points to severe bacterial infection
  • Elevated leukocytes – Occur in bacterial infections, stress, inflammations, or leukemia
  • Elevated ESR – May indicate autoimmune diseases (rheumatism, lupus), polymyalgia rheumatica, vasculitis, infections, anemia, or malignancies

For significantly elevated values, further examination is needed to identify the exact cause. Treatment depends on the underlying cause.

What does a low level mean?

  • Low CRP values (below 3 mg/L) – Normal and favorable, indicate absence of significant inflammation
  • Normal leukocytes – Mean no acute infection
  • Normal ESR – Largely rules out severe inflammation
  • Very low leukocytes – May indicate immune problems, bone marrow disorders, or medication side effects and require further investigation

The purpose of this test is primarily to detect elevated values. Normal values mean no significant active inflammation, although additional testing may be necessary for specific symptoms.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to what people usually want to know.

How does it work from order to result?

After ordering we generate a referral letter and email you the instructions. You pick a collection point yourself and book an appointment there. Blood is drawn at the location, processed at the lab, and your result arrives digitally.

How quickly can I get tested?

Usually very quickly. Collection points typically have slots within a few days, sometimes even same-day. It depends on how busy the location is. For a few specialist analyses we first ship collection materials, which takes a bit longer.

Do I need to book an appointment?

At most collection points yes. Some accept walk-ins. This is clearly indicated per location. You choose the location that works best for you.

Do I need to fast before the test?

That depends on the test. Whether fasting is required, and from what time, is clearly stated in the instructions you receive after ordering. No surprises at the counter.

When and how do I receive my result?

It varies per analysis: from same-day to a few working days. Standard values often come back quickly; analyses that go to an external lab can take a bit longer. You get an email with a link to your digital result, including a short explanation per value.

Where can I go for collection?

We work with 1,000+ collection points across the Netherlands. After ordering you'll see which locations near you are available and you pick where you'd like to go.
