Rheumatoid factor is a biomarker that may be present in the blood of people with rheumatic diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis. It is essentially a group of antibodies directed against the body's own immune system, which is typical of autoimmune diseases.
Testing for Rheumatoid Factor is useful for diagnosing rheumatoid arthritis and other rheumatic conditions. It aids in determining the presence and severity of the disease, especially in individuals experiencing symptoms such as joint pain, stiffness, and swelling.
A positive Rheumatoid Factor test indicates the presence of the specific antibodies in the blood. This may suggest rheumatoid arthritis or other autoimmune diseases. However, it is important to note that some people with a positive test have no symptoms and that not everyone with symptoms tests positive.
A high level of Rheumatoid Factor in the blood may indicate an active autoimmune reaction, such as in rheumatoid arthritis. It can also be associated with a more severe course of the disease and a greater chance of joint damage.
A low or undetectable level of Rheumatoid Factor may suggest the absence of rheumatoid arthritis or other autoimmune diseases. However, it is possible to have rheumatoid arthritis without detectable levels of Rheumatoid Factor, known as seronegative rheumatoid arthritis.
