What is the Thyroid Function Test?

The Thyroid Function Test is a blood test that measures how well your thyroid gland is working. The thyroid plays a key role in regulating metabolism, energy, and overall bodily functions. The test measures the following biomarkers:

  • TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone): Regulates the production of thyroid hormones. Elevated TSH levels may indicate hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), while low TSH levels may suggest hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid).
  • Free T4 (Free Thyroxine): The main thyroid hormone that controls the rate of metabolic processes in the body.
  • Free T3 (Free Triiodothyronine): The active form of the thyroid hormone, responsible for stimulating energy production and oxygen use in cells.

Why should you take the Thyroid Function Test?

Testing TSH, Free T4, and Free T3 is essential for detecting and managing thyroid imbalances. It is especially useful for people who:

  • Experience fatigue, weight changes, or mood fluctuations.
  • Show symptoms of a slow or overactive metabolism.
  • Have a family history of thyroid disorders.
  • Are taking thyroid medication and need monitoring.

What does it indicate?

The Thyroid Function Test helps determine whether your thyroid produces too many or too few hormones, directly affecting:

  • Energy levels and metabolism.
  • Weight regulation and digestion.
  • Heart rate and temperature control.
  • Concentration and mood.

What does a high thyroid level mean?

High TSH levels may indicate hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), where too little hormone is produced. High Free T4 or Free T3 levels may indicate hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), where too much hormone is produced.

What does a low thyroid level mean?

Low TSH levels may indicate hyperthyroidism, while low Free T4 or Free T3 levels usually suggest hypothyroidism. Both conditions require medical follow-up and appropriate treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to what people usually want to know.

How does it work from order to result?

After ordering we generate a referral letter and email you the instructions. You pick a collection point yourself and book an appointment there. Blood is drawn at the location, processed at the lab, and your result arrives digitally.

How quickly can I get tested?

Usually very quickly. Collection points typically have slots within a few days, sometimes even same-day. It depends on how busy the location is. For a few specialist analyses we first ship collection materials, which takes a bit longer.

Do I need to book an appointment?

At most collection points yes. Some accept walk-ins. This is clearly indicated per location. You choose the location that works best for you.

Do I need to fast before the test?

That depends on the test. Whether fasting is required, and from what time, is clearly stated in the instructions you receive after ordering. No surprises at the counter.

When and how do I receive my result?

It varies per analysis: from same-day to a few working days. Standard values often come back quickly; analyses that go to an external lab can take a bit longer. You get an email with a link to your digital result, including a short explanation per value.

Where can I go for collection?
