Varicella-Zoster IgA antibodies are specific proteins produced by the immune system in response to an infection with the varicella-zoster virus, the cause of chickenpox and shingles. These antibodies are a component of the immune system that helps protect against infections.
Testing for Varicella-Zoster IgA antibodies can be useful for determining whether someone has recently been infected with the varicella-zoster virus, or for assessing an individual's immune status against this virus. This is particularly important for pregnant women, immunocompromised patients, and prior to receiving a chickenpox or shingles vaccine.
The presence of Varicella-Zoster IgA antibodies in the blood indicates a recent or active infection with the varicella-zoster virus. This may assist in the diagnosis of unclear cases of chickenpox or shingles.
A high level of Varicella-Zoster IgA antibodies may indicate recent exposure to the virus or an active infection with chickenpox or shingles.
A low or non-detectable level of Varicella-Zoster IgA antibodies may mean that a person has not recently been exposed to the virus or that the immune system has not generated a strong reaction to the infection. This can also indicate that a person may be susceptible to infection with the varicella-zoster virus.
