What is Fatigue Basic?

The Fatigue Basic blood test is specially developed to identify the most common causes of fatigue. Chronic fatigue can have many causes, including vitamin deficiencies, anemia, thyroid problems, and disrupted blood sugar levels. This test measures nine essential biomarkers most often responsible for fatigue symptoms. It is a good starting test if you are regularly tired without a clear reason.

What is tested?

  • Vitamin D – Important for energy, immune system, and bone health
  • Vitamin B12 – Essential for energy production and nerve function
  • TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) – Regulates metabolism and energy level
  • fT4 – Free thyroxine (active thyroid hormone)
  • Glucose – Blood sugar level for energy supply
  • Hemoglobin (Hb) – Oxygen transport, tests for anemia
  • MCV – Mean corpuscular volume of red blood cells
  • Iron (serum iron) – Available iron for oxygen transport
  • Magnesium – Crucial for energy production and muscle function

Why should you get Fatigue Basic?

This test is suitable for anyone who is regularly fatigued, has difficulty getting up in the morning, experiences concentration problems, or remains tired despite sufficient sleep. Fatigue often has multiple causes simultaneously. Vitamin D and B12 deficiencies are very common and easily treatable. Thyroid problems (hypothyroidism) are a common but often overlooked cause of fatigue. Anemia due to iron deficiency causes extreme tiredness. Magnesium deficiency leads to muscle weakness and fatigue. This test requires fasting for accurate results.

What does it indicate?

The results point to specific causes of your fatigue. This test measures:

  • Vitamin status – Low vitamin D and B12 are very common causes of chronic fatigue
  • Thyroid function – Elevated TSH with low fT4 indicates hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) with extreme fatigue as the main symptom
  • Blood values – Low hemoglobin and iron indicate anemia
  • Blood sugar regulation – Low or high glucose can cause energy fluctuations
  • Minerals – Magnesium deficiency leads to muscle fatigue and general weakness

Often, multiple values are abnormal, which explains why the fatigue is so persistent.

What does a high level mean?

  • High glucose – May indicate diabetes or insulin resistance, causing post-meal fatigue
  • Elevated hemoglobin – Rarely occurs but can indicate dehydration or blood thickening
  • Very high iron – Rare but can indicate hemochromatosis
  • Excessively high vitamin D – From extreme supplementation can cause side effects
  • Low TSH with high fT4 – Indicates hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) which can also cause fatigue due to exhaustion

These abnormalities require medical evaluation.

What does a low level mean?

  • Low vitamin D and B12 – Very common causes of fatigue, well treatable with supplements
  • Low hemoglobin and iron – Confirm anemia causing extreme tiredness and requiring treatment
  • Elevated TSH with low fT4 – Means hypothyroidism requiring medication
  • Low magnesium – Causes muscle fatigue, cramps, and general weakness
  • Low glucose – May indicate hypoglycemia with extreme energy dips

The good news is that all these causes are well treatable and your energy often improves quickly after correct treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to what people usually want to know.

How does it work from order to result?

After ordering we generate a referral letter and email you the instructions. You pick a collection point yourself and book an appointment there. Blood is drawn at the location, processed at the lab, and your result arrives digitally.

How quickly can I get tested?

Usually very quickly. Collection points typically have slots within a few days, sometimes even same-day. It depends on how busy the location is. For a few specialist analyses we first ship collection materials, which takes a bit longer.

Do I need to book an appointment?

At most collection points yes. Some accept walk-ins. This is clearly indicated per location. You choose the location that works best for you.

Do I need to fast before the test?

That depends on the test. Whether fasting is required, and from what time, is clearly stated in the instructions you receive after ordering. No surprises at the counter.

When and how do I receive my result?

It varies per analysis: from same-day to a few working days. Standard values often come back quickly; analyses that go to an external lab can take a bit longer. You get an email with a link to your digital result, including a short explanation per value.

Where can I go for collection?

We work with 1,000+ collection points across the Netherlands. After ordering you'll see which locations near you are available and you pick where you'd like to go.
