What is the follow-up test for inhalant allergy?

The follow-up test measures IgE antibodies separately against each of the 8 allergens from the inhalant screen. Where the screen only shows whether you are sensitized to at least one of them, here you get a separate result per allergen. This shows which allergen is behind a positive screen.

What is tested?

  • House dust mite: symptoms all year round, especially indoors and in bed
  • Cat: symptoms near cats or in homes where a cat lives
  • Dog: symptoms near dogs or in homes where a dog lives
  • Timothy grass: grass pollen, with most symptoms between May and August
  • Rye (pollen): pollen from a cereal, very similar to grass pollen
  • Cladosporium: a mold in outdoor air, mainly in summer and late summer, that also grows indoors in damp places
  • Birch: tree pollen in spring, with most symptoms between March and the end of May
  • Mugwort: weed pollen in late summer, from July to September

Why should you get the follow-up test for inhalant allergy?

After a positive inhalant screen, if you have symptoms such as sneezing, a blocked or runny nose, itchy or watery eyes or shortness of breath and want to know which allergen may be the cause. This helps with targeted measures, such as limiting contact with an animal, tackling damp in the home or keeping windows closed during the pollen season. For possible immunotherapy it is also important to know which allergen you are sensitized to.

Allergy pills (antihistamines) do not affect this blood test; you do not need to stop them.

What does it indicate?

For each allergen, the result shows whether you are sensitized: whether your body has made IgE antibodies. That is not the same as an allergy. A result only counts if it fits when and where you have symptoms.

What does a high level mean?

A value above the cut-off for an allergen means that you have IgE antibodies against it. If that fits your symptoms, that allergen is a likely cause. Positive results for allergens that never bother you are common and are not treated. Grass pollen and rye pollen cross-react strongly and are often positive together. A higher value does not say how severe the symptoms are.

What does a low level mean?

A value below the cut-off means that no IgE antibodies against that allergen were found; an allergy to it is then less likely. If all 8 are negative while the screen was positive, it may be a low sensitization without clinical meaning. Allergens that are not in the screen, such as horse, rodents or other molds and pollens, are not measured here either.

Risks and downsides of this test

  • Blood draw at a collection point. A needle in a vein is a safe routine procedure. A bruise or slight dizziness happens; an infection of the puncture site is rare.
  • No test is one hundred percent reliable. A result can point to something that is not there, or miss something that is. A result is a snapshot and does not make a diagnosis.
  • An abnormal result has consequences. It can lead to follow-up tests with your GP, and to worry that turns out to be unnecessary. Follow-up tests or treatment can have downsides of their own.
  • Incidental findings are not expected with this test. An incidental finding is something other than what you were looking for. During checkout you choose whether you want to be informed about one.

Frequently asked questions

How does it work from order to result?

After ordering we generate a referral letter and email you the instructions. You pick a collection point yourself and book an appointment there. Blood is drawn at the location, processed at the lab, and your result arrives digitally.

How quickly can I get tested?

Often within a few working days. How soon you can be seen depends on how busy the location is and the type of analysis. For specialist analyses we first ship collection materials, which takes a bit longer.

Do I need to book an appointment?

At most collection points yes. Some accept walk-ins. This is clearly indicated per location. You choose the location that works best for you.

Do I need to fast before the test?

That depends on the test. Whether fasting is required, and from what time, is clearly stated in the instructions you receive after ordering. No surprises at the counter.

When and how do I receive my result?

Usually within a few working days after collection. Turnaround time varies by analysis; analyses sent to an external lab can take longer. You receive your laboratory report securely by email. It lists the measured values, units, reference ranges and any flags added by the laboratory.

Where can I go for collection?

We work with 1,000+ collection points across the Netherlands. After ordering you'll see which locations near you are available and you pick where you'd like to go.

Amazing website experience. I ordered various tests for 2 people. We went to one of the supported centers and took samples. Also after the results were ready, I needed a letter from the laboratory and they prepared the letter for me in no time. Definitely recommended.

“Amazing service!”

Received a packet with everything needed, went to a walk in clinic (Amsterdam DC Clinic) where my blood was drawn and I was out the door within 5 minutes, and then after posting the samples, received results 2 days later. Results were easy to understand as well. Amazing service, would highly recommend!
