What is the follow-up test for food allergy?

The follow-up test measures IgE antibodies separately against each of the 6 foods from the fx5 food allergen screen. Where the screen only shows whether you are sensitized to at least one of them, here you get a separate result per food.

What is tested?

  • Chicken egg: mainly in young children; most children outgrow it before the age of four
  • Cow's milk: mainly in babies and young children; usually goes away by itself
  • Cod: fish; fish allergy often only starts in adulthood and usually does not go away, and the result says nothing about other types of fish
  • Wheat: a cereal in bread and pasta; a wheat allergy is something different from celiac disease
  • Peanut: often causes severe reactions and often lasts a lifetime
  • Soy: a legume; often gives a positive result without symptoms due to cross-reaction with peanut, other legumes and pollen

Why should you get the follow-up test for food allergy?

After a positive fx5 screen and a clear reaction shortly after eating, such as itching in the mouth, hives, swelling, vomiting or shortness of breath, if you want to know which of these foods may be the cause. If you eat these foods without problems, the test adds little: a positive result is then no reason to leave something out of your diet.

What does it indicate?

For each food, the result shows whether you are sensitized: whether your body has made IgE antibodies. That is not the same as an allergy. Whether you are really allergic only becomes clear if the result fits a reaction to that food; in case of doubt, an allergist can do a food challenge.

What does a high level mean?

A value above the cut-off for a food means that you have IgE antibodies against it. If that fits a reaction to that food, it is a likely cause. Positive results for foods you eat without symptoms are common, for example for soy due to cross-reaction with pollen, and in children the result for egg and milk often stays positive after the allergy has gone. The level of the value does not say how severe a reaction will be.

What does a low level mean?

A value below the cut-off means that no IgE antibodies against that food were found; an IgE-mediated allergy is then less likely. With soy and wheat, and in young children with cow's milk, an allergy can still be missed. Lactose intolerance and celiac disease are not tested with this test.

Risks and downsides of this test

  • Blood draw at a collection point. A needle in a vein is a safe routine procedure. A bruise or slight dizziness happens; an infection of the puncture site is rare.
  • No test is one hundred percent reliable. A result can point to something that is not there, or miss something that is. A result is a snapshot and does not make a diagnosis.
  • An abnormal result has consequences. It can lead to follow-up tests with your GP, and to worry that turns out to be unnecessary. Follow-up tests or treatment can have downsides of their own.
  • Incidental findings are not expected with this test. An incidental finding is something other than what you were looking for. During checkout you choose whether you want to be informed about one.

Frequently asked questions

How does it work from order to result?

After ordering we generate a referral letter and email you the instructions. You pick a collection point yourself and book an appointment there. Blood is drawn at the location, processed at the lab, and your result arrives digitally.

How quickly can I get tested?

Often within a few working days. How soon you can be seen depends on how busy the location is and the type of analysis. For specialist analyses we first ship collection materials, which takes a bit longer.

Do I need to book an appointment?

At most collection points yes. Some accept walk-ins. This is clearly indicated per location. You choose the location that works best for you.

Do I need to fast before the test?

That depends on the test. Whether fasting is required, and from what time, is clearly stated in the instructions you receive after ordering. No surprises at the counter.

When and how do I receive my result?

Usually within a few working days after collection. Turnaround time varies by analysis; analyses sent to an external lab can take longer. You receive your laboratory report securely by email. It lists the measured values, units, reference ranges and any flags added by the laboratory.

Where can I go for collection?

We work with 1,000+ collection points across the Netherlands. After ordering you'll see which locations near you are available and you pick where you'd like to go.

“Smooth process and good support”

Amazing website experience. I ordered various tests for 2 people. We went to one of the supported centers and took samples. Also after the results were ready, I needed a letter from the laboratory and they prepared the letter for me in no time. Definitely recommended.

“Amazing service!”

Received a packet with everything needed, went to a walk in clinic (Amsterdam DC Clinic) where my blood was drawn and I was out the door within 5 minutes, and then after posting the samples, received results 2 days later. Results were easy to understand as well. Amazing service, would highly recommend!
