Hashimoto's Disease is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland, leading to chronic thyroid inflammation. This can damage the thyroid and reduce its ability to produce hormones, which is essential for regulating metabolism.
Testing for Hashimoto's is useful if you are experiencing symptoms of hypothyroidism, such as fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, or dry skin. It may also be indicated if you have a family history of thyroid disorders, in order to detect the condition early and initiate treatment.
The test looks for high levels of antibodies against thyroperoxidase (TPO) and thyroglobulin, which indicates an autoimmune reaction against the thyroid gland. These antibodies can be present years before symptoms develop, allowing for early intervention.
A high level of TPO and/or thyroglobulin antibodies suggests Hashimoto's Disease. This can lead to hypothyroidism, where the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones, which can slow down various bodily functions.
A low level of these antibodies suggests that Hashimoto's Disease is less likely. However, it is possible to have the disease with normal antibody levels, especially in the early stages or in mild forms.
