What is Alkaline Phosphatase (AF)?

Alkaline phosphatase (AF) is an enzyme found in various tissues in the body, including the liver, bones, kidneys, and the digestive system. It plays a crucial role in the process of breaking down proteins and is involved in bone formation and the transport of fatty acids into and out of cells.

Why should you test/check Alkaline Phosphatase?

Testing AF levels can be useful for assessing the health of your liver and bones. It may be recommended if you have symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, weight loss, or jaundice, or if a bone disease is suspected. It can also be part of a routine check-up to monitor your liver function.

What does it indicate?

AF levels in the blood may indicate the presence of liver diseases, bone diseases, or other conditions. An abnormality in the normal values may indicate liver damage, biliary tract obstruction, bone growth or repair, or certain forms of cancer.

What does a high Alkaline Phosphatase level mean?

A high level of AF may indicate liver damage or diseases, bone diseases such as osteoporosis or Paget's disease, or an obstruction of the biliary tracts. It may also be elevated in certain cancers or during the healing of a bone fracture.

What does a low Alkaline Phosphatase level mean?

A low level of AF is less common, but may occur due to malnutrition, a deficiency in certain vitamins and minerals, hypothyroidism, or in rare cases, hereditary conditions that affect the production of the enzyme.

Frequently asked questions

How does the home test work from A to Z?

How do I collect my blood sample?

A small prick on your fingertip lets you collect a few drops into a tube. The instructions include step-by-step photos and video, so no guessing required.

How do I return the sample?

In the included return envelope with free shipping. Just drop it in the mailbox; the lab processes your sample as soon as it arrives.
