Anti-TPO (antibodies against thyroid peroxidase) is a biomarker used to detect antibodies in the blood that target the enzyme thyroid peroxidase. This enzyme plays a crucial role in the production of thyroid hormones.
Testing for anti-TPO antibodies is useful in individuals exhibiting symptoms of a thyroid disorder, such as fatigue, weight changes, and temperature sensitivity. It aids in the diagnosis of autoimmune diseases of the thyroid, such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease.
The presence of anti-TPO antibodies in the blood suggests that the body's immune system is reacting abnormally to the thyroid gland, often indicating an autoimmune thyroid disease.
A high level of anti-TPO antibodies typically indicates an autoimmune thyroid condition. This can mean that the thyroid gland is slowly being damaged, which may ultimately lead to hypo- or hyperthyroidism.
A low or non-detectable level of anti-TPO antibodies is normal and usually indicates the absence of autoimmune thyroid problems.
This test is included in Dutch healthcare guidelines and is regularly used for its respective indications.

It varies per analysis: from same-day to a few working days. Standard values often come back quickly; analyses that go to an external lab can take a bit longer. You receive your laboratory report securely by email. It lists the measured values, units, reference ranges and any flags added by the laboratory.
