Creatine Kinase (CK), also known as creatine phosphokinase (CPK), is an enzyme found in various tissues and cells in the body, including muscles and the brain. CK plays a crucial role in cellular energy production, especially in those cells that require high energy levels.
Testing for CK is useful in the diagnosis of muscle diseases, such as muscular dystrophy, and in the evaluation of damage to muscle tissue, which can occur after a heart attack, physical trauma, or with prolonged muscle strain. It can also help monitor individuals using certain medications that may cause muscle damage.
A CK test can help determine the extent of muscle damage or the presence of a muscle disease. It is used to diagnose acute or chronic damage to muscles and to monitor the effectiveness of treatment.
High levels of CK can indicate recent muscle damage, active muscle disease, or a recent heart attack. Intense physical exertion, muscle diseases like myopathy or muscular dystrophy, and even some medications can lead to elevated CK values.
Low levels of CK are usually not concerning and may indicate a lack of muscle mass or highly efficient muscle function. In most cases, a low CK level is not considered an indicator of health problems.
